On this page you
will find details of the range of components available for 1/24th scale of
model.
Although not all parts
are kept as “stock” items most can be produced in quite a short space of time.
Most of the pre-cut wooden parts have either come from customer requests or
from my need during construction of a model. All parts were cut using a CNC
(computer numerical control) milling machine, this ensured consistent accuracy
and time saving.
Starting
from the bottom upwards here are a couple of Frame Ideas used by myself on a
1/24th scale
Here is a
simple 18 section centre frame used on my Ark it consisted of two centre discs,
one plain one to sit on the baseboard the other had 18 slots cut around the
perimeter. The sleepers were placed into these slots and using accurately cut
spacer strips at the ends everything was then screwed down to the baseboard.
With the sleepers being accurately laid out from the start when it came to cut
the shutters by allowing just 1mm extra on the length of each one, all 18 could
be cut at once with out the worry that they would all need to be a different
size. All that was required was a bit of cleaning up and a small amount of
fitting. Price for 2 machined discs from£8.00
Machined from one piece of 3mm plywood this centre frame is to suit the MFD Waltzer drawing. By utilising the entire centre
frame as one piece the need to make individual sleepers and frames is removed.
Side and front step bracket areas are on separate pieces allowing for
positioning to suit the builder. Obviously the ride would not be demountable,
but it does save a considerable amount of time for the builder who “just wants
to get on with it”
Prices from £35.00 plus postage
Cut on one sheet of Plywood to suit your model be it
24 section, 18 section, 3hills or 4 hills. Just remove them from the sheet,
clean off the tags and edges and away you go.
Prices
for 18 gates £30.00
Prices for 24 gates £45.00
Prices include base material if you are building to
the MFD plans.
Please state amount of hills you are going to use.
During the construction of My Ark I could not find the
“Lego” wheels stated on the drawings so I produced tooling so that I could
mould my own. I can now offer these to other people who are having the same
difficulty. The wheel assembly consists of a rubber tyre, plastic hub, axle
material and a bearing bracket moulded from Acetal. Acetal is used in industry
to make bearings, gears, bushes etc. It is not possible to glue Acetal without
special glues however on the bearing piece are two small Dimples that can be
drilled to take two small screws.
The tyres are 14mm diameter and 4mm wide. Price £1.50
per assembly (1 hub,1 tyre, 1 bracket, axle material)
Drilled on the CNC to ensure accurate spacing each
comes with material for the driving pins.
Prices from £18.00
Scaled from my own full size
Also available, scaled from drawings made of Lakin
originals are raised head horses
After many requests for moulded Waltzer cars
in 1/24th scale here they are. Although not modelled on any
particular manufacturer they are a combination of different designs. The cars
consist of base, body, seat, roller brackets, and a moulded platform ring,
price for these parts is £7.50 per car. I can also supply a ball bearing that
fits into the base a pivot pin and a moulded pivot stub to fit onto the
platform. This is £4.20 per car. Please note I DO NOT supply a safety bar or
Rollers with the cars. For rollers use brass curtain rollers or I can supply
turned brass one to order. The safety bar is bend from 1/16th Brass
rod and should present no difficulties to the builder. From a commercial point
of view the safety bar is time consuming to make and thus expensive for the
consumer

You will need some M4
Studding, Nuts and Washers to construct the kit as well as wood glue and
clothes pegs. Studding, Nuts and Washers can be supplied for £2.00 extra. (note
picture above shows paybox with roof added)
TWIST STYLE
Scaled up from the
1/50th plastic kit, this kit is supplied as flat pre cut wooden
parts this kit is suitable for either mounting on a swan neck of standing
beside a ride. Flat parts and instructions £20.00
LED Caps
With LEDS now becoming
almost the “norm” as lighting for model fairgrounds I have produced a moulded
cap that fits over the top of a 3mm LED to give it more of a “fairground
shape”.
A little spot of
super glue is needed just to hold the cap in place. Available in seven colours
Red, Yellow,
Having supplied pre-cut parts and mouldings to a
number of model makers I am asked a lot if I supply a complete kit in 1/24th
scale for a Waltzer. Waltzers are without doubt the most popular model probably
because it is a ride that has stood the test of time and can constantly be updated to keep up with the
latest trends in artwork, music and lighting. The scope for decoration and
individual themeing of a model means that no two will be the same. Having
acquired a large collection of Fairground drawings taken from rides mainly
during the 40,s I have decided to produce a kit of parts based on a 32 section
“house” Lakin speedway. The idea being that it is possible to buy a kit of
pre-cut parts, materials and mouldings with drawings to enable the builder to
construct a model that can be made as either an Ark or Waltzer both will have
18 section floors and will utilise parts that are already available. No
timeline has been set for the project like the 1/50th version it is
all down to time. I am hoping to have the prototype on show at the Long Eaton
show in November. Parts so far designed are the base, gates, shutters, most of
the centre, moulded cheese wheel, rounding layout and the running tram which is
hoped to provide as a moulded part.
Here are a couple of pictures, one of the base as cut
and a CAD image of the centre. It is not designed to be demountable
If anyone is interested in the Lakin Ark and wants to
“have a go” before the kit is produced email me for more information.
